Mexico’s Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT), through its Jalisco Centre, is incorporating recycled tyre rubber into pavement maintenance works on the federal 15 Morelia – Guadalajara highway
The periodic conservation works are being carried out on isolated sections between Jocotepec and El Molino, covering the stretch from approximately kilometre 97+940 to 116+500. The works use asphalt pavements incorporating reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) together with ground rubber derived from end-of-life tyres (ELTs).
According to SICT Jalisco, the use of these recycled materials aims to improve the pavement’s performance, particularly its durability and resistance, which is especially important on the section in question, where the road is exposed to high traffic loads.
Processing ELTs into rubber for asphalt also represents an outlet for a difficult-to-manage waste stream in Mexico, which can often end up being illegally dumped. The project therefore combines maintenance on the road that connects Guadalajara to the rest of the country with circular-economy objectives, using recycled rubber to improve infrastructure while reducing the environmental impact associated with the disposal of waste tyres and the consumption of virgin raw materials.
