The clean-up operation along the Santa Catarina River in the Las Sabinitas area of Guadalupe, Mexico, helped remove more than 150 tyres weighing over two tonnes, the Nuevo León Ministry of Environment reports

The cleanup operation in Nuevo León, Mexico took place after more than 10,000 tonnes of waste had already been removed from the area as part of ongoing remediation work.

Raúl Lozano Caballero, Nuevo León’s Secretary of Environment, highlighted the importance of the clean-up efforts and the commitment to local communities: “Las Sabinitas was an illegal dumping ground for decades, and today we are demonstrating that this history can be reversed through consistent, coordinated work. We will not stop until this area is clean, safe and restored to a condition where it can once again be a river, not a rubbish dump.”

The latest operation was carried out through cooperation between the Ministry of Environment, SUPERA, the Metropolitan Environmental Fund, ADN Energía and the municipality of Guadalupe. Their collaboration enabled the removal and appropriate disposal of the accumulated tyres, helping to prevent health and environmental risks for local residents.

This joint effort in Mexico also highlights the importance of cooperation between government bodies, the private sector and associations in addressing a long-standing problem in the area.

Accumulated tyres in riverbeds can obstruct the natural flow of water, create sources of pollution and provide breeding grounds for harmful pests. Their removal and proper disposal help reduce the risk of flooding and support the ecological recovery of the Santa Catarina River.

The Nuevo León state government said it would continue remediation work in Las Sabinitas until the area had been restored to suitable conditions for the community.
