A regional waste tyre recycling campaign in Chile’s O’Higgins Region has collected nearly 40 tonnes of waste tyres from four municipalities, and the material is now being sent for recovery to the Arrigoni Ambiental NFU plant in Mostazal
The O’Higgins Regional Secretariat of the Ministry of the Environment (SEREMI) led the campaign in partnership with the municipalities of Codegua, Coinco, Machalí and Pichidegua, as well as the tyre recovery company Arrigoni Ambiental NFU. The campaign helped collect more than 4,000 kg of tyres from Machalí, bringing the total collected amount of tyres across the four municipalities to approximately 40 tonnes.
José Pablo Lagos, Environment Secretary at O’Higgins SEREMI, said the campaign demonstrated how cooperation between municipalities, private companies and local communities can provide practical solutions for waste management while supporting the implementation of Chile’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Law, known as the REP Law.
The collected tyres have been transported to Arrigoni Ambiental NFU’s recovery plant in Mostazal, where they will be recycled and recovered.
Mauricio Bravo Carvallo, General Manager of Arrigoni Ambiental NFU, said the campaign helps bring the benefits of the REP Law to municipalities across the region. He also highlighted the importance of having a local tyre recovery facility in O’Higgins, allowing collected tyres to be given an appropriate destination and returned to the circular economy.
Chile’s REP Law identifies tyres as one of its priority products and establishes requirements for their management once they reach the end of their useful life, while initiatives such as this one in O’Higgins help build the collection and recovery infrastructure needed to support the legislation at a local level.
