The Municipality of San Salvador de Jujuy in Argentina has collected more than 500 used tyres during a new Neumatón campaign held in the Santa Rita neighbourhood, as part of efforts to promote recycling and prevent the spread of dengue
The Neumatón initiative involved residents and businesses from the Santa Rita and Malvinas neighbourhoods and surrounding areas and was organised jointly by the municipal government, the Ministry of Health, neighbourhood associations and local businesses.
Marcelo Molina, head of Circular Economy, said the collection was supported by a prior awareness campaign, which included door-to-door visits and information sessions on recycling materials such as cardboard, plastic and aluminium, adding that collecting used tyres also helps prevent dengue by removing potential mosquito breeding sites.
The Neumatón campaign helped collect more than 500 tyres from cars, pick-up trucks, motorcycles and bicycles, which will be transported to a cement plant, where they will be used as fuel, preventing them from becoming potential water reservoirs, Molina explained, noting that some residents also expressed interest in reusing tyres to make plant pots and other items for sale.
The municipality said it hopes to organise another campaign in November for residents who couldn’t participate in this latest collection.
