SIGNUS celebrated 20 years of activity by presenting SIGNUS Asociación, a strategic plan and a new visual identity that reflects its vision for the future

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, SIGNUS held an event in Madrid that outlined the main priorities for its next phase, including establishing SIGNUS Asociación to comply with the new regulatory framework, encouraging participating producers to take part in decision-making and enabling its members to join the organisation’s governing bodies.

General Assembly also appointed new members of the SIGNUS Asociación Board of Directors, with Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear, Michelin and Pirelli remaining as founding members.

Daniel Camacho, president of SIGNUS, said: “Reaching our 20th anniversary allows us to look back with pride at what we have built while facing the future with the enthusiasm to continue moving forward. These 20 years cannot be understood without the people, companies, public administrations and organisations that have worked alongside us. Together, we have not only managed a product that has reached the end of its intended life, but also promoted and consolidated the tyre recycling industry, turning what is often wrongly called waste into valuable materials with a wide range of applications.”

The event also featured Cristina Aparicio Maeztu, Director General of Energy Transition and Circular Economy of the Community of Madrid, who highlighted the role of public administrations in developing the circular economy and managing waste.

The Community of Madrid is the competent environmental authority for authorising and supervising extended producer responsibility schemes headquartered in the region, with the authorisation of SIGNUS Asociación falling within this framework, allowing the organisation to begin its new phase under a new legal structure. Its participation in the anniversary highlighted the importance of cooperation between public administrations and extended producer responsibility schemes in improving waste management and advancing towards a genuinely circular economy.

Local authorities, research centres, media organisations, waste managers and workshops received awards in recognition of their contributions. These included the city councils of Madrid and Fuenlabrada, researchers associated with the University of Granada, the Technical University of Madrid and CEDEX, environmental journalist Arturo Larena, and representatives of the waste management sector, including more than 25,000 workshops where SIGNUS carries out collection operations.

SIGNUS’s new phase follows an internal review process carried out over recent months, during which the organisation developed a strategic plan to strengthen its role in fostering collaboration, knowledge and innovation in the management of end-of-life tyres (ELTs).

Carlos Prieto Menéndez, CEO of SIGNUS, said: “In this new phase, which is now beginning, we must transform the life cycle of end-of-life tyres, working alongside all the people, companies, public administrations and organisations that have collaborated with SIGNUS over the past 20 years, as well as all those involved in their recovery. All this will be achieved through greater participation by all producers affiliated with the collective compliance scheme.”

One of the anniversary’s central moments was the presentation of SIGNUS’s new identity, unveiled alongside a manifesto video summarising SIGNUS’s vision and purpose for this next phase, focusing on topics such as the ability to evolve, transform and find new opportunities in materials that have already completed their first life cycle.
