Tyrewise Webinar on Recycled Rubber in New Zealand Roads

–

tyrewise webinar

Tyrewise is hosting a free webinar on 19 November at 11:00 AM NZST, exploring the potential use of recycled tyre materials in New Zealand’s road construction sector, featuring research into three projects being undertaken by WSP with funding from Puna Taurima, the Tyrewise Fund

The session will be hosted by Trevor Tutt of Tyrewise, who will be joined by Matt Sharp, principal pavements and materials specialist at WSP, to discuss the technical, environmental and regulatory challenges affecting wider use of tyre-derived materials in roads.

The Tyrewise webinar titled “From tyres to roads: Overcoming the barriers to recycled rubber in New Zealand” will cover three areas:

  • Spray seal applications: Investigating how devulcanised rubber can be incorporated into modified binder emulsions to meet the performance requirements of New Zealand’s roading contractors.
  • Roading specifications: Identifying and addressing barriers in existing specifications that may restrict the uptake of tyre-derived product bitumen binders.
  • Environmental impact: Developing an evidence-based framework to help assess environmental considerations when using tyre-derived products in roads.

Sharp has 16 years of experience in construction materials and currently leads research into alternative pavement materials, including bio-based alternatives to bitumen and recycled materials for roading applications.

During the webinar, he will provide an overview of the three projects, their objectives and their potential to help address barriers to the wider adoption of recovered tyre materials across New Zealand’s roading network.

The research aims to develop domestic markets for recycled tyre materials by identifying practical ways to incorporate them into road construction.
