The Australian Tyre Recyclers Association (ATRA) has elected Leigh Cometti, Managing Director of CTS Tyre Recycling, as its new chair, succeeding Jim Fairweather, CEO of Tyrecycle
In a LinkedIn post announcing his appointment, Cometti said Australia has invested significantly in recycling infrastructure and that the industry had an opportunity to strengthen domestic recovery and rescue of end-of-life tyres and conveyor belts.
“As an industry, we have a significant opportunity to build on this investment, strengthen domestic recycling capabilities and ensure that valuable resources are recovered, repurposed and returned to productive use. The infrastructure, technology and investment are already in place to deliver meaningful change. Our collective challenge now is to ensure that policy, regulation and market demand support the full utilisation of Australia’s domestic recycling capabilities,” Cometti wrote.
ATRA said its priorities for the coming year include increasing recovery volumes in the OTR tyre market, improving compliance and enforcement, and strengthening cooperation with state and federal regulators. The association also highlighted the need to end the landfilling of tyres, including whole tyres in Western Australia, and to improve state and federal regulations while supporting Australia’s existing tyre recycling industry.
Cometti thanked Fairweather for his leadership and contgribution to ATRA and the wider Australian tyre recycling sector.
