The Municipality of Centro, Tabasco, Mexico, has removed 1,669.65 tonnes of waste tyres between 2022 and August 2026 as part of a five-year plan to eliminate potential mosquito breeding grounds and help prevent mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya
The initiative has been carried out through ongoing cooperation between the Centro Municipal Government and the local Health Jurisdiction, with the latest results presented during a regular meeting of the Municipal Health Committee (COMUNSA).
According to the Centro municipality, 100% of the tyres collected have been sent to Geocycle for ecological co-processing, with this approach both removing potential breeding sites for disease-carrying mosquitoes and providing a productive outlet for the waste tyres through their use as an alternative fuel in industrial processes.
The municipality said the programme has expanded the area benefiting from tyre removal and forms part of its wider public-health prevention strategy. Officials also called on residents to keep yards clean and remove discarded items that could collect standing water, reinforcing the message that eliminating mosquito breeding sites is an important tool in preventing dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases.
