The Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) has shut down 13 tyre pyrolysis units operating in Keamari and Malir districts of Pakistan in violation of environmental regulations, on the directives of Asif Hyder Shah, Chief Secretary of Sindh, the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported

The Environment, Climate Change and Coastal Development Department and SEPA conducted inspections of tyre pyrolysis plants across the province in Pakistan, taking action against all unauthorised and non-compliant units. After the inspections, SEPA shut down eight tyre pyrolysis plants in Keamare district. In a separate operation, the Agency closed five more units in the Ghaghar, Phatak, Dewan Cement Road and Bin Qasim Town areas of Malir district, APP reports.

The APP stated that the secretary said the action was taken under the provincial government’s ban on the establishment and operation of tyre pyrolysis plants, adding that inspections and enforcement operations would continue, and units found operating illegally or without the required environmental safeguards would face action.

Faisal Ahmed Uqaili, Secretary of the Environment, Climate Change and Coastal Development, directed Ashique Langah, General Director of SEPA, to continue the enforcement operations against tyre pyrolysis plants operating against environmental regulations.
