ZARE: Federal Government Promotes New Platform for Recycling Used Tyres

Developing an intensive exchange of knowledge, new recycling processes and new products: these are the three major goals of the “Waste Tyre Recycling Innovation Forum. This is the working title of the new platform launched by the Certified Waste Disposal Initiative (ZARE) together with the Federal Association of Tyre Trade and Vulcanization Handicrafts (BRV).

Germany’s ZARE Obtains Funding to Develop Recycling Potential

The innovation forum is aimed primarily at small and medium-sized companies that are involved in the recycling of used tyres. ZARE and BRV are now a big step closer to realising this new platform. The project is now funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). “We have already done a good job and can now really get going,” says BRV Managing Director Yorick M. Lowin.

First of all, all players in the industry should be brought together in a large network. The boundaries are very fluid. Recycling companies should be integrated as well as research, waste disposal companies, the recycling industry and many others who do not work with used tyres at first glance. Through this networking, those responsible hope for new collaborations and fresh ideas. Ultimately, the goal is to give as many tyres as possible a new life. Be it as a retreaded tyre or by recycling the individual raw materials. But pyrolysis or thermal recycling are not to be ignored.

Exchange of Knowledge – Quickly and Easily

The “Waste Tire Recycling Innovation Forum” acts as the basis and mediator between the numerous players. In this way, knowledge should be exchanged as quickly and easily as possible. At the same time, those responsible want to reduce reservations about recycling products. Here there are inhibitions both in industry and among customers, which are to be overcome by providing information about the recycling of used tyres and transparent communication. The “Waste Tire Recycling Innovation Forum” would also like to use goal and risk assessments, test procedures and the development of a guidelines to approach its goal of making used tyre recycling more popular.

With the help of federal funding, the foundation of the online platform is now starting, which presents all data and facts. At the same time, all relevant companies are approached, and attention is drawn to the new network. “The more partners we can welcome in the network, the greater our chance of significantly increasing the proportion of tyres that are recycled or reused in a sustainable and resource-saving manner,” says Christina Guth, who is responsible for this project as part of the ZARE management team. At the same time, workshops on retreading, material and thermal recycling will be organised this year to discuss approaches for expansion and greater acceptance by customers in these areas.
