Morocco is a recognised destination for many European tyres, in particular to its cement kilns. However, that does not make the country an open house for illegal tyre exports.
Morocco Takes Action on Illegal Tyres with Police Confiscating Tyres Falling Foul of Regulations
In early March Moroccan customs officers stopped and seized an HGV carrying 2,730 used tyres. The haulier concerned had been forced to use a dirt track due to checkpoints on the main roads. This gave the customs officers the opportunity to isolate the vehicle, search and seize its contents.
Whilst many European tyre management schemes and companies are engaged in the export of tyres, they have a duty to ensure that the tyres are going to legal and legitimate uses. The Moroccan customs did not disclose where these tyres had originated, but it is becoming clear that around the world greater attention is being paid to the way waste is exported and how it is handled at its destination.
