Hambleton, in rural North Yorkshire, England, is taking steps to counter fly tipping. The costs of clearing fly tipped waste have soared from £23,000 in 2016 to £44,000 in 2017.
Tyre Waste Taken Care of by North Yorkshire Council
Much of the fly tipped waste is recorded as including tyres. Officers for the council have related the increase in fly tipping to the introduction of charges for disposing of waste. They also note that the increase in the disposal of tyres has increased since the cost of tyre disposal to traders has risen.
Actions taken include the use of CCTV cameras and vehicle mounted cameras being used to try and identify fly-tippers.
Tyre and Rubber Recycling is curious about the increase of costs to tyre traders, as the tyre industry has a clear mechanism for tyre collection and the retailers already charge the consumers for the recycling. The increased costs of collection should have no bearing on the level of waste being disposed of illegally, because, of course, all tyre retailers should be following the Responsible Recycler Scheme, or at least following their Duty of care with regards to hazardous waste.
