Spanish sector shows a strong recycling sector in SIGNUS’ Annual Report

SIGNUS Annual Report is Now Available

Leading Spanish EPR scheme, SIGNUS, has released its Annual Report for the year 2018 – 2019. In it, SIGNUS reveals that it now represents some 318 member companies and is responsible for the collection of 1669,513 tons of tyres introduced to the market in that year. However, it managed the collection of a total of 192,245 tons, of which 166,478 were recycled and a further 22,142 tons were scheduled for re-use or retreading, with a balance going to other avenues.

Of the tyres recycled, 66,42 tons were shredded, and a further 97,333 were granulated. 2,717 tons were used for energy and 9 tons to other uses. Since, in the Annex to the report, we can see that SIGNUS manages the supply of TDF to eight cement kilns,  it is safe to presume that the bulk of the shredded material goes to cement kilns, though some does go to civil engineering works, particularly on the railways.

It appears that some 1,226,052 of the total 16,490,230 tyres that were declared in 2019 were sent abroad – referred to in the report as “Neumáticos reexpedidos al extranjero
