SEGINUS initiative ensures the important Galapagos environment is free of waste tyres

Galapagos Islands Waste Tyre Free

The Ecuadorian government has stated that the Galapagos islands have now been free of waste tyres for the fourth consecutive year.

Ecuador has helped the archipelago to remove more than 16,000 tyres since 2019.

The tyres were reused to obtain energy, create flooring, or be used by local artisans.

The announcement was made by SEGINUS, the Ecuadorian System for Comprehensive Management of Used Tyres that promotes the recycling initiative together with the Ministry of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition.

“The main objective is to try to give an example, not only to the country but to the world, of how circular economy models work. Not only does it have a positive environmental effect, but it also has an economic and social effect,” affirmed the executive director of SEGINUS, José Javier Guarderas.
