SPR Group has opened a tyre recycling facility in San José, Costa Rica.

Costa Rica Moves Forward with Tyre Recycling Plant

A new tyre recycling facility, operated by the Mexican affiliate of Spain’s SPR Group, located in the capital city of Costa Rica, represents a decisive step forward in the improvement and optimisation of the scrap tyre treatment plants. Due to its new innovative design, the treatment line has been designed to allow the use of a secondary fast-rotation granulator getting an input up to 5 tonnes per hour. The SPR Group has developed the technology, making it possible to obtain an output with a granulate lower than 35 mm ready to be used as a Tyre Derived Fuel (TDF).

The whole package represents a significant impact in the initial investment and operational to cement producer CEMEX at its facility in Costa Rica.

This new plant adds to other projects such as the treatment line in Ciudad de Guatemala treating Commercial and Industrial Waste (C&I) to transform this waste into Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF). In that case, the treatment line was delivered to Cementos Progreso, the leading cement manufacturer in Guatemala.

SPR has a corporate concern about global warming as well as the environment itself. In this regard, end-of-life tyres (ELT) have become an environmental liability with a high-risk component.

The SPR Group, develops and promotes solutions for the treatment of all types of tyres, including those used in the mining industry OTR (Off The Road) or cement industry, as is the case of CEMEX. On the other hand, the company’s technological solutions for ELT recovery are used by up to 60% of the Spanish market.

Therefore, the project developed in Costa Rica is the latest example of the company’s commitment to the promotion of ELT mechanical treatment and its energy recovery.

This latest development puts the SPR Group at the forefront in its geographical market, in the supply of ELT treatment technology.
