Joint Spanish Operation for Annual Square Metre Clean-Up

The Tire Manufacturers Commission in Spain, consisting of Bridgestone Hispania, Continental Tires Spain, Goodyear Dunlop Tires Spain, Michelin Spain Portugal and Pirelli Tires, has collaborated with Signus and the Network of Marine Rangers in the initiative “1 square metre by nature”.

Spanish Tyre Industry Acts to Clean Beaches

This is an action promoted by the Libera Project whose purpose is the extraction of waste – tyres in our case – from the beaches, thus highlighting the great problem posed by garbage to underwater ecosystems. “The role of both entities, both of the Commission and of Signus, consists in its withdrawal and subsequent management of the out-of-use tyres to give them a second life.

Within this project, on the 15th and 16th of June, a national action was carried out for the first time, affecting beaches throughout Spain: Andalusia, the Canary Islands, Catalonia, the Basque Country, Galicia, Murcia, the Valencian Community, and even Ceuta and Melilla. In addition, volunteers from Castilla y León and the Community of Madrid, went to the coasts of Asturias and Murcia respectively.

This initiative, which is now in its third edition, shows that one day working in the natural environment to collect waste (that is, the sum of all our clean square meters) has a very positive impact on our environment, helping to change our perspective on this problem.

Citizen mobilisation is, for its organisers, “one of the keys to ending the problem of trash.” If there is a way to raise awareness from participation, it is encouraging people to go out to the countryside and clean up what no one should have put there”.
