When Italian NGO Terre Veneto and its partners took the initiative to assist in building a school for Bedouin children in Khan al Ahmar, Israel, little did it think that its green development would become the subject of the Israeli Supreme Court.
Israeli Authorities To Demolish Italian Funded Tyre School
The school was built using discarded Italian-sourced tyres, which when filled and coated gave a strong supporting structure for the school in the Arab village. However, the adjacent Israeli community of Kfar Adumim is expanding and has plans for 92 luxury homes.
In a case brought to the Supreme Court, the court decided against the Arab village and as a result, the tyre-derived school and all the surrounding properties will be demolished. The occupants will be relocated to a new site some 12 kilometres away.
