Ontario tyre collectors have until the end of the month to register with a new regulatory group, the Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority (RPRA).
RPRA Due to Take Place of OTS
The Ontario Tires Stewardship (OTS) program will cease on December 31, 2018, with the RPRA taking over as the new regulatory group.
Until the new year the tyre regulations will fall under the Wind-Up Plan produced by the OTS. The plan outlines how collection and recycling of used tyres will operate until the replacement scheme is operational.
Tyre producers will also be directly responsible for ensuring that tyres are collected from Ontario residents and businesses.
It is believed that RPRA will function differently from the OTS programme, which had managed millions of dollars in feed, spending the bulk on tyre disposal costs.
Service providers, including tyre collectors, haulers, retreaders and processors, must register with the Authority with no fee by October 31, 2018. Producers or the Producers Responsibility Organisation must report the collection sites in their system, the tyre haulers, retreaders and processors in their tyre collection or management by November 15, 2018.
